Hands up who knows who is credited with inventing critical illness cover (CIC) as we know it?

Keep those hands up if you remember when the first product was launched? I'll give you a clue; it was the same year the largest selling 12" single in the world was released. Since then, the product has developed in various guises around the world. In South Africa, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, it has become a well established form of insurance that has paid around £3bn in claims since 2000 in the UK.
