Along with what appeared to be the entire population of Britain, we ventured out into the wind and rain to start our Christmas shopping last weekend. Mistake number one.

Mistake number two closely followed, having battled our way into an electrical retail store only to discover that said population of Britain had cleared every single shelf of the Nintendo Wii. Apologies in advance to my son. With the desire to spontaneously exclaim ‘bah humbug’ at random passers-by, mistake number three was traipsing round what felt like every store in search of this year’s ‘must-have’ toys for my family. Several elbows in my ribs later, and I was still no closer to getting my hands on a voice-changing Dalek helmet or a Barbie with in-built mp3 player. Needless to say...
