I always used to think a reboot was something you had to do to a computer after you had installed some new software.
However, recently the term 'reboot' has been increasingly associated with famous cinema franchises such as James Bond, Batman and most recently, Star Trek. A reboot in the cinematic sense means the producers taking a tired and possibly failing old franchise and rewriting its rules. The main characters usually remain the same but are often recast with younger actors, but the major difference is that the reboot either ignores the established story history or rewrites it significantly.
