NS&I to pay out hundreds of millions over bereavement claims errors

CEO resigns and pensions minister says taxpayers will not foot bill

Treasury-backed National Savings & Investments (NS&I) will compensate estates over errors that led to as many as 37,500 bereavement claims not being paid.

In a statement today (26 March), NS&I pointed to a search process, which failed to identify all NS&I products, as responsible for the error. The total value of affected unpaid bereavement claims is estimated at £476m. The issue has now "been resolved" for current and new bereavement claims, with "robust measures" having been introduced, NS&I set out. "NS&I apologises and is extremely sorry for these errors," the statement continued. "It is working hard to ensure everybody affected is paid what is owed to them."
