OBR 'deeply regrets' early release of Budget document

Mistaken release of Budget documents forced Richard Hughes' resignation

Senior members of the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) have apologised to Parliament for the early release of its Economic and Fiscal Outlook last week (26 November), an event that led to the resignation of the watchdog’s chair, Richard Hughes.

During a Treasury Committee (TC) hearing this morning (2 December), Tom Josephs, member of the Budget Responsibility Committee at the OBR, said: "On behalf of the leadership of the OBR, and I know also on behalf of Richard Hughes, we would like to apologise to this committee, to all members of parliament and to the chancellor and the prime minister about the early release of the document."  Josephs said that the fiscal watchdog understood early release "was hugely disruptive" to the Autumn Budget and Prime Minister's Questions.
