Chancellor Rachel Reeves has reiterated her party’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and vowed to “never, ever squander the hard-earned trust” of the British people.

Speaking at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool today (29 September), Reeves told delegates that the government can be trusted to manage the UK economy because "we were unequivocal in our commitment to economic responsibility".  She said that remaining fiscally responsible should also not be viewed as "a trade off with Labour values".  Labour has received significant scrutiny from markets and commentators since Reeves' maiden Budget in October 2024, with rising debt and stagnant growth eroding the chancellor's near £10bn fiscal headroom in the space of six months.  Having rest...
