Advisers and their clients must resist the temptation to wait for a crash before investing in markets, Artemis Global Select Fund manager Simon Edelsten told delegates at the 2019 SIFA Conference.

Speaking at the two-day conference, which began in Northampton today (6 June), the fund manager said that, when deciding whether to invest, people needed to think about whether we were now in a period of short-term volatility or the start of a bear market. In his talk, entitled Dealing with Global Turbulence: Is it time for a Defensive Approach?, Edelsten suggested a combination of bad economic decisions and expensive stocks could trigger the next bear market. Risks for investors to consider, he added, included trade wars, valuations, exuberance and excess debt.
