'Alternatives are full of nasties', warns Jupiter's Amanda Sillars

"Alternatives are full of nasties", Jupiter fund manager Amanda Sillars has warned advisers, saying she avoids "exotic" assets as they tended to be illiquid and use excessive gearing.

Speaking at the London leg of the 2018 Multi-Manager Forum, Sillars (pictured) said she largely steers clear of alternative assets with those sorts of qualities for the Jupiter Merlin Portfolios. That said, the Independent Funds Team did still make use of absolute return funds, she added, continuing: "It is the ‘Merlin-esque' type of absolute return, however" said Sillars. "In other words, it's equity, it's long-short and it has limited use of derivatives and gearing - what I would call those ‘nasties'."
