Five of Madoff's colleagues to face trial over Ponzi scheme

Five colleagues of the hedge fund fraudster Bernard Madoff are awaiting trial on Tuesday, following a five-year probe into one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in history.

The longtime secretary of the imprisoned trader, as well as four other back-office employees, will be going on trial, the Guardian reports. The trial in federal court in Manhattan is expected to last up to five months as the government unveils details provided by its key witness, Madoff's former finance chief Frank DiPascali. It is hoped that he will explain the role each defendant played in the Ponzi scheme, which stretches back as far as 1970 and is said to have cost investors a total of nearly $20bn.
