HMRC wins High Court battle on Goldman 'sweetheart' deal

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has won a High Court case over its tax deal with Goldman Sachs.

The case, which focused on a "sweetheart deal" between the investment bank and the Exchequer, was brought by campaign group UK Uncut Legal Action. It claimed the deal, where Goldman was let off part of its tax bill, had cheated the UK taxpayer out of £20m. The BBC reports the judge ruled the deal was "not a glorious episode in the history of the Revenue" but was not illegal. HMRC said it had changed its practices since it made the agreement with Goldman in 2010. It also claimed the maximum amount taxpayers would have lost was £8m.
