A Barclays bank manager investigated a colleague's £20,000 theft from a customer aged 95 - then stole £23,000 from the same pensioner by copying the crime.

Barry Gillard, 31, was jailed yesterday for two-and-a-half years after pleading guilty to 12 charges of fraud for the copy-cat crime, reported the Daily Mirror. The court heard how he stole sums of between £340 and £5,000 during June 2010, from pensioner Frederick Castleton, who died two months ago. Judge David Higgins told Gillard: “It’s hard to imagine a higher degree of financial trust than that which is placed in a bank manager.” Jacqueline Samuels, prosecuting, said: “One aggravating feature is the deliberate targeting of a vulnerable victim.” Gillard was caught when an irr...
