Govt agrees to separate public sector pension talks

The government has agreed to discuss reforms of the local government pension scheme (LGPS)separately from other public sector schemes after unions condemned its planned one-size-fits-all approach.

The move is a success for the Trades Union Congress (TUC) which, in a document leaked to the BBC, said all public sector pension schemes could not be reformed in the same way. Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude, pictured, has urged unions to call off strikes scheduled for 30 June. However, the National Union of Teachers (NUT), the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), and the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union have already agreed the walk-out.
