FTSE flirts with 6,000 on ARM surge

London's top share index ticked towards 6,000 late on Wednesday as tech giant ARM Holdings added 11% on rumours of a deal with Microsoft.

The FTSE added a further 30 points, adding to steady gains made throughout the week, to reach 5,978 with an hours trade remaining. ARM jumped 43p, or almost 11%, to 447p after after Microsoft was said to be preparing a version of Windows to run on ARM's chips. Elsewhere, BSkyB added 2% amid speculation News Corp.'s takeover of the company will go ahead. There has been some big economic news on Wednesday, with revised ONS data showing UK gross domestic product (GDP) rose 0.7% in Q3, just below its initial 0.8% estimate.
