Russia to host 2018 World Cup

England has missed out on hosting the 2018 World Cup, after FIFA awarded the prestigious prize to Russia.

The announcement, made minutes ago in Zurich, came despite heavy lobbying from David Cameron, Prince William and David Beckham. In addition, FIFA has named Qatar as the host of the 2022 World Cup. A study by PricewaterhouseCoopers earlier this year suggested a net positive impact of £3.2bn to the UK economy in the summer of 2018 if the World Cup was held here. In a letter to the Telegraph earlier this year, some of the country's most well-known business leaders and entrepreneurs, including Lord Sugar and Sir Martin Sorrell, backed the bid.
