Burnham to stick with fiscal rules as power set to flow out of Whitehall

Andy Burnham has promised further devolution to the UK’s regions in a bid to break Whitehall’s grip on power and improve living standards for all – but insisted he will not “take risks with the public finances”.

The Makerfield MP set out plans for a ten-year agenda to boost living standards and growth in every UK postcode by transferring power out of Whitehall in the "biggest rebalancing of power our country has seen", he said in a speech in Manchester today (29 June). Burnham acknowledged his plans, which also include a ‘No 10 North' office in Manchester through which power and resources will be redistributed across the country, will only be deliverable with a stable economy, built on sound public finances and adherence to chancellor Rachel Reeves' fiscal rules on borrowing.
