Early access 'a distraction' from real savings problem

A think-tank has urged politicians not to change legislation to enable early access to pension pots.

The Social Market Foundation urged policy makers not to "meddle with the current pension rules" as there is no evidence the status quo deters pension from retirement saving. The Conservatives have pledged to investigate the option of allowing early access to pension pots to encourage savings, while giving flexibility for people to access that money to enable things like getting on to the property ladder. The Labour Party has also backed the idea, though pensions minister Angela Eagle said the process could be fraught with difficulties. However, SMF's report says any change to allow...
