Harman calls for end of compulsory retirement

People should be allowed to carry on working into their 70s and 80s, according to Harriet Harman.

The deputy Labour leader says there is an incorrect assumption people are ‘past it' when they reach 65. According to reports, the Government will today announce a fast-track review of the UK retirement age. Currently, employers can force employees to retire when they reach 65. Harman says older people should have the right to carry on working if they wish to, and should also be able to adopt flexible working hours if needed. However, any change is likely to be controversial, with business leaders concerned older employees could refuse to retire indefinitely.
