Workplace pension popularity increases in recession

The popularity of occupational pension schemes increased last year, despite the recession.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show pension scheme membership increased during 2008, though defined benefit schemes continued to shrink. During 2008, the UK had 9m active employee pension scheme members in total, up from 8.8m in 2007, though lower than the 9.2m recorded in 2006. However, the increase was largely due to an increase in the number of public sector employees with workplace pensions, and private sector membership fell from 4m in 2006 to just 3.6m last year.
