First State open new role

DAVID Whitten, manager of First State's Global Resources fund, has created a new position in a Canadian oilfield services group and boosted exposure to BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto.

It comes as the global mining market plunged in September following fears of a slowdown, oil prices also dropped and concerns over the slowing US economy stunted global growth. Whitten revealed he secured the holding in Canada-based Petrowest Energy Services, which provides pre-drilling and post-completion services for the oil and gas industry, at its initial public offering (IPO). However he dropped US-based marine freight carrier Quintana Maritime through fears of increasing competition and also reduced the fund’s position in China Shenhua Energy over concerns about the country’s econom...
