Oil drops FTSE for first day in four

The FTSE 100 index fell 25.10 points to close at 5,340.80 today as oil majors fell on news of US oil refineries commencing operations in stricken states along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Shell A shares were down 24p to 1,752p, while the B shares dropped 24p to 1,818p. BP fell 6.5p to 628p. Mining stocks also had a tough day, BHP Billiton falling 12.5p to 811p, Antofagasta shedding 22p to 1,441p, and Xstrata down 16p to 1,318p. British Airways fell 1.75p to 288p after announcing a 25% increase in the fuel surcharge it applies to long-haul flights. AstraZenica dropped 10p to 2,647p after announcing it will place more value on ‘partnerships’ with companies such as Cambridge Antibody, in order to faster develop new drugs.
