The Council of Mortgage Lenders says business standards offered by estate agents are currently so great that it would be wrong for the government not to impose regulation on the industry.
The Council says it is wrong that in the process of finding and financing a new home, consumers should get the protection associated with regulation of standards at every turn apart from actions involving estate agents. Thus, the CML is lending its weight to the arguments put forward by the Consumers Association in a campaign just launched, which calls on the Department of Trade and Industry to ignore guidance from the Office of Fair Trading, suggesting estate agents should be allowed to continue doing business in an unregulated environment.
