Gains by Vodafone helped the FTSE 100 index to a slim gain of about 1.5 points to 5,662 after two days of losses.
Vodafone, the biggest mobile phone network operator by revenue, initially gained 1.75p to 122.50p after reporting a near 5% gain in customer numbers. Rival O2 is unchanged despite reporting an 18% jump in subscriber numbers, driven mainly by its key markets of the UK and Germany. The former Cellnet division of BT has just been acquired by Spain’s Telefonica. BOC, the gasses supplier, is up 49p to 1,200p as analysts hold out increasing hopes for industry-wide sales gains expected to be announced by chief rival France’s Air Liquid when it reports later this week.
