House prices make £100k history

Every town in the UK now has an average house price of at least £100,000, according to the Halifax House Price Index, first quarter.

The firm says this is the first time this has happened since the Index began, and says just five years ago there were more than 200 towns below the £100,000 average mark. Lochgelly in Fife was the only town with an average price below £100,000 at the end of 2006, according to the Index. Price rises since then have taken the average price in Lochgelly to £104,738 in 2007 Quarter One. However, Lochgelly remains the most affordable town – out of the 489 surveyed – in the UK.
