Calls for template for 'confusing' insurer claims figures

The Health Claims Forum is calling for uniformity in life insurer claim statistics.

It says it is working on guidelines so advisers and consumers can compare insurers on a "like for like" basis. Currently, life offices can choose how to present their claims figures, which usually include number of claims and reasons for claiming. But where one insurer may focus on a drop in claims declined, another may lead with total amount paid out. Aegon Scottish Equitable last week published its critical illness (CI) claims statistics for 2008 and included the amount paid out in proportionate payments, under the ABI's new 'negligent' banner.
