FTSE remains resilient in face of insurer falls

The FTSE 100 stayed in the black this afternoon, despite large losses from insurance and construction companies.

The index barely moved from the morning, up just eight points to 3,564 as of 3:15pm. Of the losing stocks, Wolseley was the worst following news of its rights issue and dividend cut. It was down 18.08%, or 29.90 points. Following close behind was the insurance sector, with Aviva dropping for the second day after its announcement yesterday of £1.3bn losses for 2008. The company has sunk more than 100 points in the past two days of trading, and was sitting at 166.90, down 12.11%.
