PBR - Disappointment at no stamp duty cuts for first time buyers

Nationwide has called the Government's decision not to reduce the stamp duty burden on first time buyers disappointing.

The building society calls the reform vital to helping more people buy a home affordably. Nationwide says: "We are disappointed to see that he has decided not to reform stamp duty to reduce its burden on first-time buyers." However, the society says it agrees with Chancellor Alisdair Darling's statement that fixed rate mortgages bring certainty to homeowners about the cost of their mortgage should base rate increase.
