House prices still in doldrums

House prices fall for the sixteenth consecutive month as supply continues to exceed demand the latest Hometrack survey claims.

The report says there was a further fall of -0.1% in house prices in September. The national average house price now stands at £160,700, down from a peak of £167,700 in June 2004 and down over 3.5% in the past 12 months. But the number of buyers registering with estate agents has increased by 2.1% bringing the total increase in buyers this year to over 22%. More buyers in the market and a greater level of confidence has resulted in an increase in activity of 5.9%, says Hometrack, with housing market activity up by 15.5% over the past 3 months.
