The European Parliamentary Financial Services Forum (EPFSF) has suggested the EU Directive on the portability of occupational pensions could add significant costs to employers or even worse result in scheme closures.
In a briefing note published ahead of a EPFSF pensions meeting on the 4 May, the Forum says in modern European labour markets where life-long jobs are rare, workers should not be penalised for changing jobs. But it points out it is not currently clear the Directive will significantly improve labour mobility across the EU. In particular the Forum says the way the Directive is currently drafted could “significantly add to the cost of employers providing occupational schemes, which are generally provided on a voluntary basis, and could at worst result in a reduction of the schemes offered....
