IT'S NOT PERSONAL FINANCE, but the lead story in all the national newspapers this morning suggests Chancellor Gordon Brown is going to "tax" the food we eat by introducing a new "fat tax" on junk food.
The Daily Telegraph says a Downing Street-based policy unit has proposed a "fat tax" or VAT on junk food to tackle the rising incidence of heart disease, diabetes in young people and the relevant health costs incurred. The Telegraph says this policy unit has “stressed” no proposals have yet been put to Tony Blair - but it is of course on the front of every national newspaper today. It’s a signal at least that the government may be prepared to raised taxes again in next month’s Budget.
