Election day boosts US stocks

UK stocks climbed steadily throughout the day, led by British Airways after oil prices eased again, however, all the world's eyes are on the outcome of the US election.

The FTSE 100 Index closed this afternoon with a gain of 19.4 points to 4693.2 points. Amvescap and Barclays raised its value as UBS AG reported growth at its wealth management arm. Barclays, which will publish third-quarter earnings at the end of the month, was up by as much as 11.50p to 553.5p, while Amvescap ended the day 8p higher to 308.50p. Media firm Pearson was also a good earner today, picking up 13.5p to 614.50p. Losers included Smith and Nephew, which continued to fall throughout the day ending down 12.5p to 463.50p. Supermarket operator Sainsbury also lost 5.5p to 261.7...
