FTSE mixed as Google IPO soars in New York

A mixed day of trading on the London Stock Exchange saw the FTSE struggle to make gains as big names BAE and Barclays lost ground.

The FTSE 100 index gained just 7 points or 0.17% to 4,362 – having earlier in the day gained 0.6% to 4,381 – as the price of BAE and Barclays stocks fell. BAE eventually closed down 5.5p or 2.62% to 204.5p, having pulled back from earlier 4.3% losses. Man Group, the money manager, also lost 26p or 1.91 to £13.34 and Barclays also dropped 9.5p or 1.85% to 503.5p. However, ITV was one of the best gains of the day, having risen 2.25p or 2.24% to 102.5p, along with mining giant Rio Tinto, which gained 30p or 2.19% to £14.02.
