Friends Provident keeps FTSE in check

Friends Provident continued to be a mainstay at the top of the FTSE leader board, but the blue-chip index struggled and finished at 5,450, down 4.6 points, or 0.08%.

Friends advanced 4p, or 4.5%, to climb to 92.8p having earlier come within touching distance of 94p. It was followed by Tullow Oil, which climbed 25p, or 3.69%, to 702p, and Man Group, up 13p to 519.5p. Shares in the the London Stock Exchange Group suffered the biggest drop on Monday, slipping 38p, or 4.73%, to 765p. ITV, down 1.7p to 43.7p, also dragged. Midway through trading in New York, the Dow Jones appears to be headed in the same direction as the FTSE, slipping 65.38 points, or 0.56%, to 11,594.52. GEN Motors suffered the biggest fall, dropping 0.39 points, or 3.49%, to 10.79...
