FTSE ends flat after rollercoaster day

The FTSE 100 index ended the day flat, down 3.9 points or 0.1% to 5,672 points, losses again for mining firms offsetting strong gains from BT.

Anglo American fell 0.38% to £20.80, Antofagasta dropped 1.92% to £20.92 and Rio Tinto declined 0.07% to £28.14. Prudential fell 1.24% to 598.5p after it said online bank Egg continues to experience difficult conditions in the unsecured lending business. South African investment bank Investec also dropped 1.84% to £27.21 despite doubling full year profits at its investment banking business. Meanwhile, strong result from BT saw it climb 8.12% to 226.25p as it reported a 1% increase in fourth quarter earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation and before specific item...
