Mining, telecoms lead FTSE Down

The gloss came off bigger mining stocks today, sending the FTSE 100 index down 15 points to 4,525.10.

Vodafone led the losers in terms of index points lost, shedding 1.75p to 134.75p. BHP Billiton led the losers in terms of percentage share price lost, falling 20.5p to 505.75p. Rio Tinto dropped 45p to 1,445p. Anglo America shed 37p to 1,383p. Analysts said the sell-off reflected gains of nearly 8% on average across the sector in trading through the past week. Gallaher, the tobacco firm, gained 18p to 688p after reporting gains in second half profit on the back of stronger sales in Eastern Europe.
