Vodafone and GlaxoSmithKline led the FTSE 100 index down 3.90 points to 4,408.10 today despite a good majority of index constituents making gains.
However, the sheer size of those stocks making losses pulled the rest of the index down. Vodafone shed 3.5p to 132.5p by the close, while GlaxoSmithKline fell 16p to 1,095p. BSkyB dropped 12p to 733p on rumours of possible merger talks between competitors Channel 4 and Channel 5 ahead of the government’s planned privatisation of the fourth channel. BAE Systems gained 4.5p to 179.5p on news of a contract win from the US navy. British Airways closed up 5p at 316p on today’s news of a new deal opening up more flights between the UK and China.
