Pensioners are now more vulnerable to the threat of living in poverty than any other group a new Government report indicates.
The report entitled 'Excluded Older People', published yesterday by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's Social Exclusion Unit, reveals close to one-third of people living in ‘non-decent’ homes are over 60, while 20,000 penseioners die though the winter each year. It says: “What our consultation told us is that since 1996/97 there have been pronounced falls in the proportion of pensioners below low-income thresholds.” The ODPM adds that Government is spending £10bn extra on benefits compared to the 1997 system, a great deal of which is still not being claimed, while 2.1 million pen...
