BRITAIN'S BIGGEST private-sector union yesterday said it was confident of winning a legal battle against the government over pension protection, in a move that could trigger up to £6bn of claims against the Department for W(EC ork and Pensions (DWP), reports the Times .
Amicus has called on the European Court of Justice (ECJ) to fast-track its decision on whether the government provided adequate protection for 1,000 workers who lost their pensions in the collapse of Allied Steel and Wire (ASW) three years ago, says the paper. If Amicus — which is joined in the claim by Community, the union that represents steel and textile workers — wins the action, the government is likely to face claims from workers who lost their pensions when their companies collapsed.
