FTSE closes in on a six-year high

The FTSE 100 index has ended the day close to a six-year high with a rise of 87.2 points or 1.4% to 6,314.8, following a recovery in metal prices.

Miners dominated the leading stocks with Vedanta Resources posting the biggest gains with a rise of 5.78% to £11.90, while Kazakhmys climbed 4.78% to £11.19, and Xstrata added 4.67% to £24.42. Northern Rock also gained 4.12% to £12.12, while Liberty International added 5.31% to £13.29, although some stocks did decline with Wolseley falling 0.66% to £13.50, and Capita Group slipped 0.93% to 642.5p. However, International Hotels was the biggest loser with a fall of 1.38% to £12.86, closely followed by ICAP which dropped 1.13% to 504.75p, while DSG International declined 0.73% to 170.75p. ...
