Black September dents consumer confidence

Consumer confidence has fallen further in September after remaining stable through the summer, according to Nationwide's consumer confidence index.

However, consumers are confident the Bank of England will cut interest rates tomorrow. While Nationwide’s index remained stable in July and August, it fell three points during September to give a consumer confidence score of 50. Ongoing concerns about the economy, house prices, unemployment and the high cost of bills are blamed for the fall. Consumers were particularly concerned about the present economic situation, with their assessment of current events down seven points to 39.
