Oil slip boosts FTSE rise

The FTSE 100 index has rallied slightly by 20.9 points or 0.36% to 5,843.2 in early trading, after the oil price dipped again and boosted many stocks such as cruising firm Carnival.

Carnival, the ship operator, has gained 53p or 2.22% to £24.38 as the price of oil has now dipped below $60 a barrel again, while Hanson, the house building materials firm, has also earned an extra 16p or 2.35% to 696.5p as its rival Wolseley has announced plans to place new shares worth 10% of its capital – weakening its financial position. Amvescap, the money manager, has also risen 9.5p or 1.74% to 555.5p. BHP Billiton, in contrast, has dropped 14p or 1.584% to 873p, as a fall in oil price affects its profits margins, and WPP Group, the advertising giant, has dropped 65p or 5.58% to ...
