Mobile stocks lose their gains but FTSE holds its own

Earlier in the day, mobile phone stocks dominated trading following the debut of Virgin Mobile, however, interest quickly shifted albeit traders held onto their sunny dispositions.

The FTSE 100 index eventually closed up 0.8% to 4377 along with the FTSE All-Share index which added 17 points to 2180 while the FTSE 250 index ended the day up 28.8 points or 0.4% to 6074. British Airways made the best gains of the day and closed up 11.75p or 4.98% to 247.75p while drug company Shire Pharmaceutical rose 18.25p or 4.1% to 463.25p.Gus held onto its strong start earlier in the day and eventually added 25.5p or 3.1% to 849p thanks to improved sales. Lloyds TSB banking group also made gains of 10.5p or 2.65% to 406.75p along with Northern Rock which recovered from yesterd...
