FTSE closes week on a run

Four days of gains have taken the FTSE 100 index to its highest level in a month, closing up 6.60 points at 4,983.60 today.

Boots led the gainers with a 19p rise to 634.5p after further speculation the chain of chemists shops may be nabbed by a private equity investor following its decision to offload its medicines making business. Xstrata closed up 22p at 1,049p on recommendations investors buy its shares on forecasts of continued rises in prices of the commodities is supplies, such as coal. Scottish and Southern, the utility, gained 17p to 929.5p, also on analysts recommendations. British Airways was up 3.5p to 273.75p as crude oil prices fell again in New York on forecasts increased output by refiner...
