At least 25% of property sales in 62 postcode districts in England and Wales were worth more than proposed £600,000 married couple IHT threshold in the past year, according to Halifax.
The research was conducted following Chancellor Alistair Darling’s pre-budget report (PBR) earlier this month, which proposed allowing married people to pass their IHT allowance on to their spouse. This means married couples would benefit from a tax free allowance of £600,000. London has the highest number of postcode districts with property sales exceeding the threshold at 46, followed by 14 in the South East and one each in the South West and Yorkshire and the Humber.
