FTSE crosses 4,700 on Lloyds TSB growth

The FTSE 100 index has finally closed up over the 4,700 threshold again, in a positive day's trading for almost all firms.

The UK benchmark index gained 42.8 points or 0.9% to 4,736.8 by close of business in London after Lloyds TSB posted its biggest gain in 17 months and announced the bank will meet its profit forecasts this year. Lloyds TSB eventually saw the best gains, closing up 15p or 3.5% higher to 443p while rival bank Northern Rock earned 19p or 2.51% to 775p. Reed Elsevier, the publishing house, also gained 12.5p or 2.69% to 476.5p while BOC, the energy group, earned 22.5p or 2.44% to 944p and Corus Group added 1.25p or 2.37% to 54p.
