The FTSE 100 Index rose 52 points, or 0.9%, to 5,908 points today - above 5,900 points for the first time since June 2001.
Kazakhmys gained 5.63% to 910p, Xstrata rose 2.41% to 1,703p and Antofagasta was 2.33% higher at 2,010p. Speculation BAA could receive a takeover bid from Spanish construction giant Ferrovial next week sent the airport operator 5.03% higher to 814p. Meanwhile, Kingfisher headed the fallers losing 1.60% to close at 231p. In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has risen 100.14 points, or 0.9%, to 11,072.42 points as falling oil prices and a government report showing better-than-expected job growth signal economic expansion is sustainable.
