The Civil Partnership Act will take effect on 5th December, the Department for Trade and Industry has announced, which opens the way for gay couples to receive financial benefits equal to heterosexual marriages.
MPs approved the Bill in October 2004, enabling same-sex couples to make a formal, legal commitment to each other by forming a registered civil partnership which opens the door to new pension and inheritance tax rights, similar to those shared by married couples. Further provisions in the Act include: Employment and pension benefits; Equitable treatment for the purposes of life assurance; Recognition under intestacy rules; Access to fatal accidents compensation; Recognition for immigration and nationality purposes; A requirement stating partners must provide reasonable maintenance...
