Third of institutional investors up commodities exposure

Nearly a third of UK institutional investors plan to increase their allocation to commodity-based investment products over the next five years, according to Lyxor Asset Management.

The Société Générale-owned subsidiary, found 30% of those surveyed among 20 of the top 100 pension funds in the UK this September, intend to increase their allocation. Approximately 15% of institutional investors currently invest in commodity-based investments, with this number doubling by 2013, says the firm. Lyxor believes commodities are increasingly being used by investors for diversification purposes, as well as other functions, such as inflation hedging.
