FTSE climbs back up

The FTSE 100 index is trading about five points above the 5,000 mark, adding 33.40 points this morning.

Cairn Energy continues its surge, increasing 42 points to £12.42. Steel firm Corus Group and investment firm Amvescap are also trading well up 1.5p to 59.5p and 8.25p to 345.25p respectively. At the other end of the scale, Alliance Unichem has shed 24.50p to 695.50p, while AstraZeneca has also lost 28p to £20.88. Alliance yesterday forecasted slower growth ahead for its distribution business. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 Stock Average index advanced 1.1% to 11,658.25, amid speculation the US government will raise its estimate for fourth-quarter economic growth. The benchmark is led by...
