Some 700 annuitants are suing Equitable Life for millions of pounds because they claim they were mis-sold annuity policies, the FT reports.
The no-win-no-fee case is being pursued through Bristol-based lawyers Clarke Willmott on behalf of the Equitable Life Trapped Annuitants, ELTA group, the paper says. Previous claims against the company have generally been settled out of court, with members of the Equitable Late Joiners’ Action Group, ELJAG, having received some £5m spread across 175 members, the FT adds. The Times says ELTA members have seen their retirement income cut by up to 40% since the demise of Equitable Life in 2000.
