The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) is understood to have put forward informal proposals to the government which could see it handle all complaints about solicitors, barristers and claims management companies.
The FOS put the proposals to the government following the publication of the draft legal services bill in May and it is believed the Ombudsman wants to take complaint handling functions away from the proposed new regulator, the Legal Services Board (LSB). Under the proposals, the FOS would assume many of the duties it currently carries out for the Financial Services Authority for the new legal services regulator.
